10 Best Attractions in Panama City Beach, Florida
Written by Candice, Florida Product Manager
Panama City Beach is one of those destinations that quietly earns its place on your list of favourite places you've ever been. 27 miles of white quartz sand, water that shifts from pale jade to deep turquoise depending on the light, and an easy, unhurried Gulf Coast atmosphere that feels a world away from the more frenetic Florida resort strips to the south.
What strikes most first-time visitors is just how complete a destination it is. The 320 days of sunshine annually help, of course, but it's the depth of experiences on offer -from championship golf and award-winning seafood restaurants to world-class diving and untouched state parks -that makes Panama City Beach genuinely worth building a holiday around, rather than treating as a footnote on a wider Florida itinerary.
Here are the 10 things we think you absolutely shouldn't miss.
1. Shell Island
2. Seafood and waterfront dining
3. St. Andrews State Park
4. Scuba diving and snorkelling
5. Pier Park and the PCB Wheel
6. Dolly Parton's Pirates Voyage Dinner and Show
7. Camp Helen State Park
8. Helicopter Tours
9. The Shore Boutique Trail
10. The beach

FAQ

#1
Shell Island
Few places on the Gulf Coast feel quite as unspoiled as Shell Island. This undeveloped seven-mile barrier island sits just offshore in St. Andrews Bay - no hotels, no gift shops, no food vendors. Just pristine white sand, emerald water, and beautiful pine forest stretching back from the shoreline.
The waters surrounding Shell Island are home to what's considered the world's highest concentration of bottlenose dolphins, and the boat crossing almost always delivers sightings. Once on the island, the snorkelling in the clear, gentle shallows is excellent. Pack your own snacks, reef-safe sunscreen, and more water than you think you'll need. There is no shade out there.

#2
Fresh seafood and waterfront dining
Panama City Beach bills itself as the Seafood Capital of the South. The Gulf waters off the Panhandle produce exceptional fresh catches, and the restaurant scene here takes that seriously.
For waterfront dining with views to match the food, Schooners Last Local Beach Club and Capt. Anderson's Restaurant are two institutions worth booking in advance. The Grand Marlin is worth it for a special evening and hits the mark for fresh seafood in a more casual setting.
Don't miss the local institutions either. Thomas Donut & Snack Shop, just across from the beach and family-owned since 1971, is a rite of passage for anyone visiting the area. And Andy's Flour Power - breakfast and martinis, improbably - serves some of the best morning meals we've had anywhere on the Gulf Coast.
If you're visiting in summer or autumn, try to time your trip around red snapper season, when the fishing community comes alive and the restaurants are serving the freshest possible catches. It adds a real sense of local occasion to the trip.

#3
St. Andrews State Park
If you want to understand why Panama City Beach has earned its reputation for natural beauty, St. Andrews State Park is your answer. Sitting at the eastern end of the peninsula, the park covers over 1,000 acres of pristine coastline, pine flatwoods, salt marshes, and dunes -and the swimming here is some of the finest on the entire Gulf Coast.
Nature trails wind through the pinewoods where you'll encounter deer, ospreys, and, if you're patient, the occasional alligator near the freshwater lagoon. The park also offers access to Shell Island via a short ferry crossing, making it a natural base for a full day of exploration. It costs a few dollars to enter - standard Florida State Parks pricing - and it's worth every cent. Early mornings here, before the summer heat builds, have a stillness and beauty that's hard to put into words.

#4
Panama City Beach scuba diving and snorkelling
Few people realise just how good the diving is here until they're underwater. Beneath Panama City Beach's turquoise waters, you'll find shipwrecks, colourful artificial reefs, and marine life at virtually every turn. The Panhandle is home to one of the largest artificial reef systems in the United States - deliberately sunken ships, aircraft, and concrete reef modules that have created thriving ecosystems teeming with amberjack, grouper, sea turtles, and nurse sharks.
Summer visibility can exceed 60 feet. Whether you're a certified diver or a complete beginner, local operators run everything from first-time discover dives to multi-day wreck-diving expeditions. And for snorkellers, the shallow reef areas around Shell Island are genuinely spectacular without requiring any certification at all. June through August offers the most settled conditions, though spring and autumn diving can be equally rewarding with far fewer people in the water.

#5
Pier Park and the PCB Wheel
Panama City Beach's premier shopping, dining, and entertainment destination sits just steps from the beach, and it's more than just a shopping centre -it's where the town spends its evenings. Pier Park stretches along the beachside with over 100 shops and restaurants, a cinema, Topgolf's two-storey entertainment venue, and the PCB Wheel offering panoramic views over the Gulf.
The mix of national retailers, boutique shops, and locally owned restaurants gives it a character that most resort shopping strips lack. Topgolf alone -with 74 climate-controlled bays, a restaurant and bar, and family-friendly programming -can swallow a very enjoyable few hours.

#6
Dolly Parton's Pirates Voyage Dinner and Show
It might not be the first thing you'd expect to find on the Gulf Coast of Florida, but Dolly Parton's Pirates Voyage Dinner and Show at Pier Park is one of the most entertaining evenings you can have in Panama City Beach.
The setup is genuinely impressive: two full-sized pirate ships, an indoor lagoon, high-energy battle sequences, acrobatics, aerial stunts, and a cast that commits entirely to the spectacle. All of this unfolds around a four-course meal, which means you're fed, entertained, and thoroughly absorbed for the entire evening without having to make a single further decision about the night. Children are completely gripped from start to finish. Adults, if they're honest, are too.
It's the kind of show that's been carefully crafted for a broad audience - big enough in scale to feel like a genuine theatrical event, but warm and accessible enough that it never loses the fun. Book in advance during peak summer months; this one sells out. And if you're travelling with younger children who are already halfway through a pirate obsession, consider this non-negotiable.

#7
Camp Helen State Park
A little less well-known than St. Andrews but every bit as rewarding, Camp Helen State Park occupies a beautiful 180-acre stretch of land bordered on one side by the Gulf of Mexico and on the other by Lake Powell -the largest coastal dune lake in Florida.
The combination of Gulf beach, freshwater lake, hiking trails, kayaking, and both saltwater and freshwater fishing makes this one of the most varied natural spaces on the Panhandle. It's a particularly good option if you have keen paddlers or anglers in the group, or if you simply want a quieter beach experience away from the more popular stretches. The dune lake ecosystem is genuinely rare - there are only a handful of them in the world - and this is one of the most accessible.

#8
Panhandle helicopter tours
For a different perspective on a destination you might think you already know, a helicopter flight over the coast is genuinely revelatory. Panhandle Helicopters run tours that take in 24 miles of turquoise water, St. Andrews State Park from above, the Grand Lagoon, the shipping channel, and Shell Island - including the sunken boats and artificial reefs that are invisible from the surface but extraordinary from 1,000 feet.
The scale of the reef system, and the clarity of the water above it, only really makes sense from the air. It's the kind of experience that reframes everything you've seen at beach level. Not cheap, but firmly in the "worth it" category for a special occasion or for anyone who wants to come away with something genuinely different.

#9
The Shop the Shore Boutique Trail
If you'd rather spend a morning hunting for something distinctive than queuing for another gift shop, the Shop the Shore Boutique Trail is one of the more charming things Panama City Beach has come up with in recent years. The trail links together a collection of locally owned boutiques and independent shops, each offering the kind of coastal treasures you won't find in the chain stores at Pier Park.
Pick up a passport at the Visitor Centre, get it stamped at each stop, and redeem it for a special souvenir at the end. It's a light, enjoyable way to see a different side of the town, and the independent businesses involved are genuinely worth supporting.

#10
The beach itself
We could not in good conscience write a top 10 for Panama City Beach and not give the beach itself the space it deserves. This is, after all, what people come for and rightly so.
The sand is a specific kind of white that catches first-time visitors off guard. Fine, cool quartz that stays almost white even in full sun and never gets uncomfortably hot underfoot the way darker sands do. The water is the Gulf of Mexico at its best - pale jade green close to shore, deepening to turquoise further out, and warm enough from late May through to October to feel genuinely inviting at any hour of the day.
The 27-mile stretch along Front Beach Road and Thomas Drive has a more relaxed atmosphere than the Atlantic-facing resorts further south. Chairs and umbrellas are available for hire, beach service companies are set up at various points, and the pace of life along the shore is one the Panhandle seems to have deliberately decided to protect. Sunrises here are beautiful. The sunsets, particularly from the pier, are the kind you find yourself describing to people for years afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to visit Panama City Beach?
Late May through September is peak season, with warm Gulf water, long days, and the full range of water sports and attractions open. June to August offers the most settled conditions for diving and snorkelling, with visibility regularly exceeding 60 feet. If you'd prefer quieter beaches and cooler temperatures, April to May and October are excellent shoulder months — the water is still warm and the crowds are noticeably thinner.
How do I get to Panama City Beach from Ireland?
It’s a great destination to combine with other locations in Florida such as Orlando or the Gulf Coast reached by flights into Tampa. Alternatively you can fly into New Orleans or Atlanta and either pick up a connecting flight or hire a car for a road trip through the Deep South. Our specialists can advise on the best flights and routing for your itinerary.
Is Panama City Beach good for families?
Very much so. The calm, warm Gulf waters are ideal for young swimmers, and the beach itself is safe and well-serviced. Dolly Parton's Pirates Voyage Dinner and Show is a highlight for families with children, and both St. Andrews and Camp Helen State Parks offer walking, kayaking, and wildlife spotting that works well across age groups. Pier Park provides a full evening of dining, entertainment, and Topgolf for older kids and teenagers. Browse our family holidays to the USA for more inspiration.
