Washington DC

Enjoy autumn in Washington, DC

Autumn really is one of the best times of year to visit the iconic city of Washington, DC. Here are our suggestions for how to make the most of your autumn trip.

The autumn temperature is perfect for exploring the eclectic neighbourhoods of Washington, DC. Georgetown charms with cobbled streets, historic row houses, and a vibrant waterfront. It’s perfect for boutique shopping, fine dining, and picturesque strolls along the C&O Canal. As a contrast, Adams Morgan offers eclectic nightlife and a multicultural vibe. Known for its diverse restaurants, lively bars, and colourful murals, it’s a great place to experience DC’s energetic spirit. Finally, no visit would be complete without a splash of politics. Capitol Hill, home to the U.S. Capitol and Library of Congress, blends political power with residential charm. Tour grand landmarks, then wander Eastern Market for artisan goods and local eats.

The magnificent museums of The National Mall are beautifully framed by the colourful leaves of the Fall. Perhaps the most popular is the National Museum of Natural History, which holds the world's most extensive collection of natural history specimens and human artefacts, including the remains of dinosaurs and tools used by early man. It’s a vast, fascinating place and you could spend all day here, but we recommend setting aside a couple of hours. Then stroll to nearby museum such as the National Museum of African American History and Culture, housed in a stunning state-of-the-art building. You will see exhibits on African American arts and culture, as well as history of the Civil Rights Movement and key events. Highlights include a shawl given to Harriet Tubman by Queen Victoria, the training aircraft used by the Tuskegee Institute and an invitation to President Obama’s 2009 inauguration.

There are several events and festivals in the autumn which make a visit at this time of year even more compelling. The National Symphony Orchestra's free annual Labor Day weekend concert is held on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. It’s free and you won’t need a ticket, but get there early as it’s first-come, first-served. At the other end of the cultural scale, you can enjoy Oktoberfest with German beer, bites and live music from. mid-September into October in locations across the city. Our final suggestion is Adams Morgan Day in early September. The lively neighbourhood buzzes with music, food vendors, artwork and family-friendly activities.
