Miami was originally founded by the Spanish and remains a very Latin city. It has lots of attractions and excellent beaches close to the downtown area, including the regenerated and fashionable South Beach. Further north Miami Beach and Sunny Isles are also good areas to see.
Some of the city’s best shopping is at Aventura Mall in Sunny Isles, the designer discount outlets of Dolphin Mall and the upmarket boutiques of Bal Harbour while the whole of South Beach is dotted with interesting shops. There are excellent restaurants throughout the city as well, with just about every world cuisine on offer.
The Everglades National Park and Key Largo are about an hour’s drive, nearby Watson Island has a number of family-friendly attractions and the Miami Children’s Museum is full of interactive exhibits.
