A historical city that will fascinate you

Natchez is the perfect place to explore the length and breadth of American history in all its glory. Marvel at one of the largest Pre-Colombian earthwork structures in the country at Emerald Mound and tour a reconstructed Indian village complete with fascinating crafts and artefacts. Visit captivating museums to learn about the turbulent years of French, British and Spanish colonisation. Explore over a dozen National Historic Landmarks and walk in the footsteps of soldiers and civil rights pioneers.

Above all though, Natchez is famed for its astonishing antebellum architecture. Boasting no less than 668 historic homes, built in the grand Greek Revival style, a visit offers an unrivalled glimpse into the opulence of pre-Civil War life for the American elite. The buildings are in pristine condition, complete with original artefacts and meticulous gardens, and most are within easy walk of the downtown centre. An especially popular time to visit is during the spring and fall “pilgrimage” seasons, when the vast majority of homes open up to the public, complete with costumed interpreters, carriage rides and a host of special events.

Perched high up on the bluffs overlooking the mighty Mississippi, Natchez makes an ideal stop off point for those cruising the river. It also forms the southern terminus of the scenic Natchez Trace Parkway, a popular tourist highway extending all the way to Nashville. Originally an old Native American footpath, this route is devoid of commercial development and a real pleasure to drive, providing access to numerous historic sites, hiking trails and river-based activities.
