Best of New England By Motorhome

11 nights from €1,559 per person Including Flights

This is a lovely itinerary for a family, couple or group of friends wanting to explore the beautiful and fascinating New England region in a motorhome. This itinerary takes nearly two weeks, but you can adapt the route as you wish, perhaps spending more time in the mountains, or perhaps side-lining New York and picking your motorhome up at one of the locations near Boston.

You select your own campsites – in high season you’re advised to book these early, but outside of peak times you can usually leave yourself with the flexibility to adapt your itinerary as you go. We’ve given some suggested campsites, but there are plenty to choose from in this region. (CA)

After picking up your motorhome from one of the locations around New York, travel around Long Island Sound before heading north-east to your first campground.

Day 3

Preston – Sandwich, Massachusetts (125 miles)

Head down the scenic eastern shore of the Thames to visit Mystic Seaport. This once great whaling port and shipyard for fast clippers is a great outdoor living-museum with many old ships and examples of New England life two hundred years ago. Head to the Scusset Beach State Reservation near Sandwich, Massachusetts for the night. You can also take a trip to Newport Island to look at the massive summer mansions of the Vanderbilts and their ilk – the setting for The Great Gatsby.

Day 4

Sandwich – Plymouth, Massachusetts (50 miles)

Loop round to visit the Kennedy Family’s Hyannis before heading north to Plymouth, where the Mayflower landed the Pilgrims in 1620. Just south is Plimoth Plantation, a recreation of the Pilgrims village and way of life in 1627. If you want, you can use this area as a base to explore Boston, taking the MBTA commuter service into this charming city.

You could also start your itinerary here and pick up your motorhome from one of the Boston locations.

Day 5

Plymouth – Salisbury Beach, New Hampshire (145 miles)

Travel north, bypassing the city of Boston. Perhaps stop at Lexington where the first skirmish started the Revolutionary War. Another interesting stop would be at North Salem in New Hampshire, the site of America’s 4,000 year old Stonehenge. Or Salem Massachusetts, the site of the infamous witch trials of 1692. An overnight option is the Beach Rose RV Park at Salisbury Beach.

Day 6

Salisbury Beach – Bar Harbour, Maine (235 miles)

Drive into Maine and to the dramatically beautiful Atlantic coastline. Your destination today is Bar Harbour on Mount Desert Island, surrounded by the cliffs and seascapes of Acadia National Park.

Day 7

Bar Harbour – Mount Blue State Park (160 miles)

Head inland to this states picturesque interior and the Blue Mountain State Park, where there is a campground. Moose and other wildlife live here, alongside red squirrels. Enjoy a visit to the park’s Nature Centre, and perhaps Webb Beach and Centre Hill.

Day 8

Mount Blue State Park – Bethlehem, Vermont (280 miles)

Cross back into New Hampshire where you will find the mountains getting higher as you reach the White Mountains, with Mount Washington topping over 6,000 feet. A suggested overnight stop is the Beech Hill campground near the charming town of Bethlehem.

Day 9

Bethlehem – Gifford Woods State Park, Vermont (125 miles)

Cross into the state of Vermont and to the year-round resort of Killington Peak. Perhaps enjoy some of the activities on offer such as hiking the trails or mountain biking, before continuing onto a campsite in one of the state parks such as Gifford Woods or Ricker Pond.

Day 10

Gifford Woods State Park – Arlington, Massachusetts (60 miles)

Travel on to Arlington, the home of Norman Rockwell, who conquered the golden age of Americana with his iconic art.

Day 11

Arlington – Lazy River, New York State (140 miles)

Now in New York State, you will follow the River Hudson southbound bringing you to Hyde Park. This was the birthplace and home of Franklin D Roosevelt. You could perhaps lunch at the Culinary Institute of America, before continuing on to the Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Lazy River Campsite, which will be a hit with children.
