Tour Itinerary
- DAY 1 - MEMPHIS
- Arrive in Memphis, Tennessee, the home of the blues. Meet your tour director and fellow travellers at an evening Welcome Reception, where you will find out more about your forthcoming tour of the south. (WR)
- DAY 2 - MEMPHIS
- Take a morning guided tour, followed by a visit to Elvis Presley's Gracelands, where you can look round the house and gardens and even board his private jet. The rest of the day is free, and in the evening you could catch a live performance in one of the blues clubs on Beale Street. (B)
- DAY 3 - MEMPHIS - VICKSBURG - NATCHEZ
- Leave Memphis and strike out southwards to VICKSBURG NATIONAL MILITARY PARK and take a guided tour of the miles of trenches, historic battlefield monuments and the Vicksburg National Cemetery. You can also see the restored Union gunboat USS Cairo and a pre-Civil War 'antebellum' mansion. Head to the town of Natchez, a charming port surrounded by plantations and grand houses dating from the height of the cotton industry. Your evening meal will be a candlelit dinner in a restored antebellum home. (B,D)
- DAY 4 - NATCHEZ
- Natchez has more antebellum homes than anywhere else in the USA. Take a guided tour of ROSALIE, once the headquarters of the Union Army and built in the early 1820s, overlooking the Mississippi River. You will also visit the National Historic Monument of LONGWOOD, a site on the Civil War Discovery Trail. Construction of this lavish octagonal home was halted during the Civil War and never completed. (B)
- DAY 5 - NATCHEZ - FROGMORE - LAFAYETTE
- Cross the Mississippi to visit the 1,800-acre FROGMORE PLANTATION, a working cotton plantation, before heading into the heart of Cajun country. The area was settled by French Acadian farmers in the mid-18th century, whose culture and language has survived to this day. See VERMILIONVILLE, a restored Acadian village within the bayou. Re-enactors in folk costumes demonstrate the lifestyle of the original settlers, and you can also enjoy live music and craft demonstrations. In the evening you can take an optional outing for a Creole dinner accompanied by traditional Cajun entertainment. (B)
- DAY 6 - LAFAYETTE - NOTTOWAY PLANTATION - NEW ORLEANS
- The tour moves onto St Martinville, home to the famous oak tree of Longfellow's epic poem 'Evangeline'. Next take a cruise through the winding swamps of the Atchafalaya Basin, looking out for the area's rich wildlife, before continuing the tour to NOTTOWAY PLANTATION, one of the grandest homes on the Mississippi, a 64-room mansion with carefully groomed gardens. Arrive in New Orleans for a two night stay in this vibrant, heritage-packed city. (B)
- DAY 7 - NEW ORLEANS
- Join an expert local guide for a full morning tour of New Orleans, with visit to French Quarter spots like Jackson Square and Pirate's Alley, and a stop at a typical New Orlean's above-ground cemetery to learn about the city's unique burial customs. Take a drive along St Charles Avenue with its elegant tree-bordered mansions next to the historic Garden District. The afternoon is free for you to explore more of the city independently, or you may choose to take an authentic riverboat cruise and lunch on the Mississippi. In the evening your tour director will join you for a GLOBUS FAREWELL CELEBRATION DINNER at the historic Court of Two Sisters restaurant, a New Orleans institution. (B,D)
- DAY 8 - NEW ORLEANS
- The tour of the south comes to an end after breakfast. Airport transfers are provided. (B)
