Start your classic tour of California in San Francisco, with a visit to Fisherman's Wharf and a cruise across the bay, before heading to wine country and the Sonoma and Napa Valleys. Venture into Yosemite National Park then drive down the celebrated Californian coast via the resorts of Carmel and Monterey on the way to the sprawling Hearst Castle, San Simeon and Danish-influenced Solvang. Take in Spanish Santa Barbara before arriving in Los Angeles with a city tour.

Tour Itinerary

DAY 1 - SAN FRANCISCO

Arrive in San Francisco, one of America's favourite cities and a great introduction to your California tour. Meet your tour director and fellow travellers at the evening WELCOME RECEPTION, where you will learn all about your forthcoming adventure. (WR)

DAY 2 - SAN FRANCISCO

Join a city sightseeing tour in the morning, which includes Twin Peaks, the Golden Gate Park, Fisherman's Wharf, before enjoying a CRUISE across San Francisco Bay. You will have free time in the afternoon to get to know the city further, maybe taking a ride on one of San Francisco's historic cable cars, shopping in Union Square, or visiting the world class Museum of Modern Art. DAY 3 - SAN FRANCISCO-SONOMA-NAPA

The tour heads off in the morning to the coastal town of Sausalito, nestled near the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge. Explore this pristine Mediterranean-style community, with its designer shops, trendy galleries, and fantastic views across the bay. Continue onwards into wine country, with a hilltop picnic lunch and WINE TASTING under grape trellises and olive trees at Viansa Winery. The rest of the day is free to spend as you choose in Napa. DAY 4 - NAPA-YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK

Leave Napa to strike out east for the Sierra Nevada mountains and a trip to YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, with its many lakes, meadows, forests and waterfalls, plus the monolithic rock outcrops of Half Dome and El Capitan, which rise hundreds of metres from the valley floor. (B,D)

DAY 5 - YOSEMITE-CARMEL-MONTEREY

Return to the coast, to follow the stunning 17-Mile Drive, which features spectacular views emerging from each bend and passes spots like the tenacious Lone Cypress and Pebble Beach Golf Course. Visit the artistic colony of Carmel, and then stop at Monterey, where you can stroll down Cannery Row, made famous by the classic John Steinbeck novel. (B)

DAY 6 - MONTEREY-SAN SIMEON-SOLVANG

Journey southward to San Simeon where you will tour HEARST CASTLE, luxurious mansion of newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst, home to glittering antiques and rare artworks, with a chance to see its 123-acre estate as well. Continue to your overnight hotel in Solvang. (B,D)

DAY 7 - SOLVANG-SANTA BARBARA-LOS ANGELES

Visit the centre of Scandinavian-influenced SOLVANG, one of the main locations in cult film Sideways, where Danish buildings and windmills have been recreated. Browse the town's speciality shops, where you can buy Danish imports and fresh pastries, before heading through the Santa Ynez Mountains to Santa Barbara. The Spanish influence is still very much apparent in this historic city, where you can see the 200-year-old MISSION, with its twin bell towers, and stroll along the town's wharf. Celebrity homes dot the coastline down through Malibu and to Santa Monica, as you make your way to Los Angeles. (B)

DAY 8 - LOS ANGELES

Take a morning sightseeing tour around Los Angeles, with stops at Olvera Street (the oldest in the city), Sunset Strip, Rodeo Drive, with its high-class boutiques, and the sights of Hollywood. The afternoon is free, and you can take an optional excursion to the Historic Hollywood attraction or Universal Studios. Join your Tour Directors and travelling companions at a special GLOBUS FAREWELL CELEBRATION DINNER. (B,D)

DAY 9 - LOS ANGELES

End your Califonia tour after breakfast, with transfers to the airport included. (B)
