Eight days Washington DC to Philadelphia
Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland
Starting in America's capital city, Washington, DC, visit the Arlington National Cemetery and spend time sightseeing before heading onwards to Mount Vernon and the Yorktown Historical Battlefield. Tour Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in the New World, founded in 1607, and also visit Colonial Williamsburg's Historic Area. Talks by a professional historian and an Abraham Lincoln reenactor immerse you in the region's rich heritage, and you will continue your tour by exploring sites like Gettysburg and Valley Forge. End the tour in Philadelphia.

Tour Itinerary
- DAY 1 - WASHINGTON DC
- Arrive in Washington, DC and join an evening WELCOME RECEPTION, where you will meet your tour director and fellow travellers and learn about your upcoming tour of America's east. (WR)
- DAY 2 - WASHINGTON DC
- Take a half-day tour of America's capital city, with stops at ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETERY to see the JF KENNEDY GRAVESITE, along with the VIETNAM, KOREAN, and WORLD WAR II MEMORIALS. There will also be photo stops at Capitol Hill and the White House. Free afternoon to explore Washington independently, with the chance to visit some of the museums of the Smithsonian Institution, like the National Museum of Natural History, National Portrait Gallery and Smithsonian American Art Museum. Other sights include Georgetown and the National Cathedral. In the evening there is an optional dinner at a popular Washington restaurant, followed by a night-time tour of the city's illuminated monuments. (B)
- DAY 3 - WASHINGTON DC - MOUNT VERNON - WILLIAMSBURG
- Leave Washington in the morning to drive through Old Town Alexandria and onto MOUNT VERNON, George Washington's former home, which has been fully restored. See the house, gardens and Washington's grave and then move onto YORKTOWN HISTORICAL BATTLEFIELD PARK. This was where the British surrendered to Washington's soldiers in 1781, which brought the American War of Independence to an end. Enjoy a colonial-style dinner, with re-enactors serving you in 18th-century patriot costume. (B,D)
- DAY 4 - WILLIAMSBURG. EXCURSION TO JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT
- Enjoy a performance from professional historic Sylvia Tabb-Lee, where you will learn more about the region's rich revolutionary heritage. The visit nearby JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT with a guided tour showing you what the first permanent English settlement in the New World was like. Move on to COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG'S HISTORIC AREA, where costumed re-enactors add to the authenticity. You can wander down its preserved streets, look through historic trade shops, see the public gaol and even stop for a drink at Raleigh Tavern, where patriots like Thomas Jefferson and Patrick Henry once met. Free evening. (B)
- DAY 5 - WILLIAMSBURG - MONTICELLO - SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK
- The tour moves to Richmond, the capital of Virginia, and one time capital of the Confederate States of America, where you will stop off at ST JOHN'S CHURCH, where revolutionary Patrick Henry proclaimed, "Give me liberty or give me death". Head next to Thomas Jefferson's MONTICELLO estate, to tour the house and gardens, which were designed by the president himself. Drive on past the sweeping vistas of Skyline Drive in SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK, where you will make an overnight stop. (B,D)
- DAY 6 - SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK - HARPERS FERRY - GETTYSBURG
- Follow a similar route to General Lee's Confederate army as it invaded Pennsylvania. Visit HARPERS FERRY in West Virginia, where John Brown's 'army of liberation' raided a US arsenal in 1859, one of the fashpoints which was a catalyst for the American Civil War. Move through Maryland to GETTYSBURG NATIONAL MILITARY PARK, with a guided tour recounting the 1863 battle. There will be some free time to explore independently before heading for a candlelit colonial-style dinner in the elegant surroundings of DOBBIN HOUSE TAVERN, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. - DAY 7 - GETTYSBURG - VALLEY FORGE - PHILADELPHIA
- Jim Getty, one of America's best Abraham Lincoln impersonators, will entertain you this morning before you set off through Lancaster County, passing Amish farmlands, to VALLEY FORGE, where George Washington and his troops stayed during the harsh winter of 1777-78. Tour the historic park and see Washington's Headquarters, the Washington Memorial Chapel and the Grand Parade. End the day in Philadelphia, where you will join your fellow guests and tour director for a GLOBUS FAREWELL CELEBRATION DINNER. (B,D)
- DAY 8 - PHILADELPHIA
- In Philadelphia, you will take a tour of sights like the LIBERTY BELL AND INDEPENDENCE HALL, before the tour of America's historic east comes to an end. (B)
