Autumn Colours

New England in the "Fall" is stunningly beautiful. This tour takes in Boston and some outstanding rural scenery as well quaint towns and pretty coastal resorts like Bar Harbor. We explore Vermont, the White Mountains and Lake Champlain as well as the Adirondacks and the Berkshires.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive Boston
Use your complimentary transfer to your hotel, where you can meet your Tour Director and join your fellow travellers at a Welcome Reception in the evening.

Day 2 - Boston - Maine Coast - Bar Harbor
We head north through New Hampshire and the town of Portsmouth to Maine, passing scenic coastline and quaint New England fishing villages on the way. We reach Mount Desert Island and the coastal resort of Bar Harbor, famous for the quality of its seafood cusiine, for a two-night stop. In the evening, we enjoy a traditional New England lobster bake.

Day 3 - Acadia National Park excursion; Bar Harbor
After exploring the beautiful scenery of the island and Acadia National Park, you'll visit the peak of Cadillac Mountain to see panoramic views of the bay, park and Bar Harbor itself. We spend the rest of the day wandering the pretty streets of Bar Harbor, with its boutique shops and galleries. You can also take a whale watching or nature cruise.
Day 4 - Bar Harbor - Pinkham Notch - North Conway
We travel inland through colourful woodlands, crossing the state border into New Hampshire. A stop off at Pinkham Notch will allow you to take the gondola up Wildcat Mountain, where you'll be rewarded with stunning views across the White Mountains. Our night's stop will be at the resort town of North Conway. After dinner there will be an informative talk about the local flora and fauna.

Day 5 - North Conway - Woodstock - Killington
We travel on through the New Hampshire countryside into Vermont, dotted by farmsteads and small villages bathed in the dramatic colours of autumn. We stop at Billings Farm and Museum to get an insight into traditional New England farming and then we head for Woodstock, one of America's prettiest little towns. We overnight in the heart of the Green Mountains in Killington.

Day 6 - Killington - Fort Ticonderoga - Lake Placid
We visit Fort Ticonderoga on the southern shores of Lake Champlain. This impressive fortress was built in the 1750s and was key during the colonial and revolutionary wars. Motoring into New York State, we arrive at the Adirondack Mountains. A protected area of lakes and stunning hills, we our overnight in Lake Placid, site of the 1980 Winter Olympics. You can tour the Olympic arena and later you'll have time to explore the town and lakeside at your own pace.

Day 7 - Lake Placid - Albany - Springfield
Driving south through the Adirondacks, we reach the shores of Lake George, a forested area with a rich history where British and French forces clashed. We continue onwards to Albany, the New York state capital, at the meeting point of the Erie Canal and Hudson River. We visit the Rockefeller Empire State Plaza before heading towards the rolling Berkshires in western Massachusetts. We visit the Norman Rockwell Museum to see the work of the area's most famous artist before arriving in Springfield for your last night. Join your Tour Director and fellow travellers at this evening's Farewell Dinner.

Day 8 - Springfield - Lexington & Concord - Depart Boston
Lexington and Concord, the villages where the first shots of the American Revolution were fired in April 1775, were immortalised in Longfellow's poem Paul Revere's Ride. You'll see Concord Bridge, the Minuteman Statue and Lexington Green. We return to Boston, where you'll get a complimentary transfer to the airport or your hotel if you choose to extend your holiday in the city.
